eight%20and%20altimetric%20height%20increase%20near%20the%20western%20boundary%2C%20but%20data%20variance%20increases%20even%20more%2C%20and%20so%20the%20signal-to-noise%20ratio%20is%20highest%20in%20the%20western%20quarter%20of%20the%20transect.%20Basin-wide%20integrals%20of%20surface%20geostrophic%20transport%20from%20steric%20height%20and%20altimetric%20height%20are%20in%20reasonable%20agreement.%20The%201.9%20x%2010%284%29%20m%282%29%20s%28-1%29%20RMS%20difference%20is%20mainly%20because%20the%20interpolated%20altimetric%20height%20lacks%20spatial%20resolution%20across%20the%20narrow%20western%20boundary%20current.%20A%20linear%20regression%20is%20used%20to%20demonstrate%20the%20estimation%20of%20subsurface%20temperature%20from%20altimetric%20data.%20Errors%20diminish%20from%200.8%20degrees%20C%20at%20200%20m%20to%200.3%20degrees%20C%20at%20400%20m.%20Geostrophic%20volume%20transport%2C%200-800%20m%2C%20shows%20agreement%20that%20is%20similar%20to%20surface%20transport%2C%20with%204.8%20Sverdrup%20%28Sv%29%20%2810%286%29%20m%283%29%20s%28-1%29%29%20RMS%20difference.%20The%20combination%20of%20altimetric%20height%20with%20subsurface%20temperature%20and%20salinity%20profiling%20is%20a%20powerful%20tool%20for%20observing%20variability%20in%20circulation%20and%20transport%20of%20the%20upper%20ocean.%20The%20continuing%20need%20for%20appropriate%20subsurface%20data%20for%20verification%20and%20for%20statistical%20estimation%20is%20emphasized.%20This%20includes%20salinity%20measurements%2C%20which%20significantly%20reduce%20errors%20in%20specific%20volume%20and%20steric%20height.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%22Nov%201998%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22English%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1029%5C%2F98jc01680%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%22%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22J3PZWFRB%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222022-09-28T16%3A28%3A41Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
